About Matthijs
Matthijs Baan is Head of ESG at Waterland, based in Bussum, the Netherlands.
Prior to joining Waterland in 2022, Matthijs was Managing Director of an international ESG and sustainability consulting firm (now called Holtara). He co-founded this business around ten years earlier and developed it into a leading ESG advisory firm in the European mid-market Private Equity sector.
Before that, he was Founder and Partner of Spring Associates, a boutique advisory and investment firm focused on Energy and Sustainability, established in 2005 in Amsterdam.
Matthijs started his career at Booz & Company, where he spent five years working primarily on strategy assignments for multinational and European companies in the energy sector. Prior to starting at Booz, he spent a year conducting applied physics research at Shell Research & Technology.
Matthijs holds an MSc in Physics from the University of Amsterdam and an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.
